 A healthy, attractive smile is important to individuals of all ages. However, with time, some older adults might find it a trial to keep all of their healthy teeth, and therefore, their even smiles. In the U.S., neglecting dental habits with age is a surprisingly common trend.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one-fourth of adults over the age of 60 do not have any of their original teeth. Moreover, one-third of the age of 65 and over have some untreated dental condition. Periodontal disease affects more than 40 percent of this population, states the CDC website.
Dentures are a common solution for lost teeth. They are removable and relatively inexpensive in comparison to other cosmetic solutions.
However, those who find dentures uncomfortable or cosmetically unappealing also have the option of dental implants, which are meant to function like real teeth. Rooted into the jaw, the implant supports the attachment of new "teeth" to potentially make it easier to chew food.
Older adults should consider improving their oral hygiene with regular dental checkups, as suggested by the American Dental Association.
