 As Valentine's Day - kissing season - approaches, many may be thinking about how to eradicate bad breath. With a few good dental care techniques, and a bit of common sense, most can ensure they have clean breath for their partner's comfort.
Brushing and scraping the tongue, and brushing and flossing at least twice day can help people avoid developing bad breath, the American Dental Association notes.
In the 72 hours before Valentine's Day, it is ideal to avoid coffee as well as onion and garlic-based foods, as the smell of these foods can be detected on the breath for days after consumption.
Dr. White, spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry, notes that "if these methods don't alleviate your bad breath, make an appointment with your general dentist to determine its source. If your dentist believes that the problem is caused internally, such as an infection, he or she may refer you to your family physician or a specialist to help remedy the cause of the problem."
Interestingly, there are oral health benefits to be gained from kissing. The increased saliva production it prompts neutralizes acids in the mouth and so, prevents tooth decay. Moreover, saliva can wash away the bacteria and trapped food particles that can cause cavities.
