Dentures need regular cleaning, but some nursing home residents don't receive adequate oral care

A woman living in a Kentucky nursing home recently suffered from a serious infection after her dentures, which had not been removed for six months, became corroded, according to a recent article published in the Lexington Herald-Leader. Some advocates of oral health and elderly care are now speaking out about the prevalence of poor dental health among seniors.

The news source explained that caregivers at the facility were unaware that the woman wore dentures, and therefore, failed to remove and clean the device.

Robert Henry, a University of Kentucky researcher, told the newspaper that one of his recent studies found that 80 percent of nursing home residents have either poor or fair oral health.

One of Henry's colleagues, Pam Stein, told the news provider that she and a team of experts will investigate the potential benefits of having one nursing home staff member from a number of different facilities receive oral care training from a dental hygienist.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 60 percent of senior citizens received treatment from a dentist in the past year.
