According to the news source, studies have found that those diagnosed with gum disease had significantly higher chances of having heart disease or problems with their blood sugar.
Infections in the gums have the potential of spreading to other parts of the body, and oral lesions may be indicative of diabetes, AIDS or Sjogren's syndrome, the news source reports.
El American Dental Association states that periodontal disease may occasionally develop in individuals without showing any symptoms, further emphasizing the importance of regular dental exams.
