Many parents may be wondering if their child is in good dental health, which is an extremely important part of healthy development. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tooth decay is the most common chronic infectious disease among children in the U.S.
Recently, Worldental.org offered parents a list of questions they can ask themselves regarding their child's oral care habits that can help them determine if their child has healthy teeth.
First, the website said to ask whether your child brushes and flosses every day. While these may seem like small things, they make all the difference in terms of oral care. Next, the dental news source said that parents should ask if their child has had a cavity in the past three years, because this may be a sign that bacteria is still active in their mouth.
"If your child complains about toothaches, particularly after consuming sweet, hot, or cold foods or drinks, this is a warning sign that there may be a cavity. If your child has puffy gums, or you see signs of blood when he or she spits while brushing their teeth, this could mean there is active gum disease," according to the news provider.
Finally, parents should limit the amount of sugary drinks they give their child each day, since these beverages contribute to tooth decay.
