Still not convinced that dental health is something that should be a priority? Some people may be surprised to learn that even seemingly simple oral health issues can be signs of something more serious. Recently, Australian news source BodyAndSoul.com spoke to dental surgeon Nader Malik and dentist Rosemary Lester about dental problems that speak volumes about a person's overall health.
First, the experts mentioned dry mouth, which may seem like a minor issue but can accelerate tooth decay. Saliva helps wash away food particles that get left on the teeth, without it, these particles will continue to wear away a tooth enamel. Dry mouth can be an indicator that a patient is taking a variety of medications, has nerve problems or even potentially Parkinson's disease.
Next, the dentists said that tooth grinding (bruxism), could be a sign of a number of underlying problems.
"Some of the many factors believed to trigger bruxism in susceptible people include mental concentration, stresses such as illness, nutritional deficiency or dehydration, or drug misuse, particularly amphetamines," said Lester, quoted by the news source.
The Mayo Clinic states that problems in the mouth can affect the overall body, and that visiting the dentist and brushing and flossing regularly are the best things people can do to protect themselves from an oral health issue getting out of control.
