Dental health professional creates new toothbrush

Dentists are constantly seeing patients who are brushing their teeth incorrectly. Understanding how to properly brush teeth is one of the keys to maintaining oral health, and while many people believe they are doing it right, they may be surprised to know that they are damaging their gums by pressing down too hard. Recently, a New York dentist created a new toothbrush to improve the way people clean their teeth.

Called the PeriClean, the device is brushless, and instead uses a pad.

"The pad isn't a smooth surface. While it's soft, effectively eliminating the abrasion from a typical toothbrush, it has a slight degree of friction and variation to the surface design in order to remove foreign matter on the teeth and that initial plaque buildup we see every day," said Jack Gruber, D.D.S., who invented the device.

Only time will tell if Gruber's concept proves to be effective, but for now Gruber and industrial designer Ed Kozloski, the engineer behind the device, are claiming that the PeriClean will help patients keep from brushing too hard and causing the gums to recede.
