When women think about the things they need to do during pregnancy, their first thought probably isn't "I have to go to the dentist" - but perhaps it should be. The American Dental Association states that oral health is an important part of pregnancy, and that a mother's dental habits can affect her unborn child.
Recently, the Pomerado News published some tips to help women who are pregnant or who are planning to get pregnancy ensure proper oral health.
"If possible, women should schedule a full dental exam before becoming pregnant. This will allow the dentist to perform any necessary treatments without the complications of pregnancy and help prevent further oral health problems in the months to come," wrote Roger Tran, D.D.S, for the news source.
Next, Tran stated that pregnant women can receive traditional dental treatments, but any elective or non-urgent procedures should be postponed until after the birth of the baby.
Finally, where available, laser dentistry may be a good alternative for pregnant women who need treatment for gum disease. This process reduces the need for anesthesia, making it safer for expectant ladies.
