Tooth decay affects more than one-fourth of children between the ages of 2 and 5, and half of those between 12 and 15, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Recently, The Denver Post reported that after finding out that a staggering fifty-seven percent of Colorado third-graders had cavities in 2007, dental health professionals in the state decided to tackle this problem head-on.
The news source spoke to Brad Smith, D.D.S., who said that even though the most current numbers on tooth decay suggest that the message of oral health isn't getting through to Colorado residents, the fight isn't over yet.
"That doesn't mean we're going to stop trying," said Smith, quoted by the news source. "A lot of people just have a low dental IQ. We're not going to get complacent and say we're not going to ever do better than this."
Healthcare officials plan to tackle the problem of childhood tooth decay by educating parents on how to help their kids form good habits and avoid bad ones. For example, snacking on chips throughout the day, or drinking soda all day long, instead of only at meals, can lead to tooth decay.
