Toothpaste ingredients to avoid

In honor of National Children's Dental Health Month, dentist Harold Katz has compiled a list of ingredients that parents may want to look out for in their child's toothpaste, since they may carry potential risks.

First, the dentist claims that FD&C blue dye No. 2, a common toothpaste dye, has been cited by the Center for Science in the Public Interest for its link to a number of health issues. The dye has been said to potentially influence the development of learning, behavioral and health problems, severe allergic reactions and headaches.

Next, the oral care expert stated that sodium lauryl sulfate is another ingredient to watch out for. The American College of Toxicology has reported that this ingredient is also found in cosmetics and industrial cleaning agents.

The dental health professional states that some parents may want to consider buying toothpastes with natural ingredients such as aloe vera juice, which is known for its soothing properties.

Katz added that adults and children use toothpaste twice a day (or at least they should) so it's important to know what the ingredients of these oral health products are.
