Trying to get children to brush their teeth can be a struggle, but it doesn't have to be. There are many resources out there that can help parents promote proper dental health in a fun way. In honor of National Children's Dental Health Month, the Charlotte Observer offered some suggestions for books and tricks that parents can use to help get their kids involved in oral care.
To get kids excited about brushing, the news source recommends two books, Brush Your Teeth Please (Reader's Digest, 1993), or the sing-songy board book Brush, Brush, Brush! by Alicia Padron (Children's Press, 2010).
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also offers some tips for parents when it comes to brushing.
"Brush your child’s teeth twice a day until your child has the skill to handle the toothbrush alone. Then continue to closely watch brushing to make sure the child is doing a thorough job and using only a small amount of toothpaste," according to the organization.
Next, a child needs regular dental check-ups, but some of them may be afraid of the dentist. For ease these fears, the Observer recommended The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist by Stan and Jan Berenstain (Random House, 1981).
Remember, a child should visit the dentist when their first tooth comes in, or by their first birthday.
