In the past few years there have been multiple studies that have shown an association between dental health and heart disease. According to Perio.org, there are many different ways that oral care can impact the heart. For example, if a person is not taking care of his teeth and allows oral bacteria to grow out of control, then that bacteria may enter the blood stream where it eventually affects the heart.
Recently, NJ.com, a New Jersey news source, spoke to Scott Navarro, D.D.S. to learn more about this association.
"People with periodontal disease and heart disease share common risk factors," said Navarro, quoted by the news provider. "[These risk factors include], older age, low-income status and obesity. Ongoing studies are examining how these factors and diseases relate to each other."
Low-income individuals may be avoiding the dentist because they do not have insurance and cannot afford the cost of oral treatment.
